Surfing in Puerto Escondido: which spot for your level, and when to go

Puerto Escondido is known worldwide for Zicatela, the "Mexican Pipeline", but you do not need to be a pro to surf here. Pick the right spot for your level, check the swell before you paddle out, and time your trip with the season. This guide covers exactly that, from a local point of view.

Which spot for your level

  • Zicatela (main beach): heavy, powerful beach break with strong rip currents. Advanced and expert surfers only.
  • La Punta (south end of Zicatela): more manageable waves; the usual place to learn and where surf schools teach. At low tide the sandbar is more exposed and the entry is gentler.
  • Carrizalillo: sheltered horseshoe cove where waves arrive softened; used for beginner lessons and also good for swimming and snorkeling.

If you are not sure, start at La Punta or Carrizalillo with an instructor and watch Zicatela from the sand.

When to go: the swell season

From May to September the biggest South Pacific swells arrive and Zicatela gets to its famous size; it is also the season with the most rip currents and red flags. From October the swell starts to drop, and winter tends to be calmer, which usually suits beginners and intermediate surfers better. A groundswell can still show up at any time of year.

Check the waves before you paddle out

Our Puerto Escondido surf report shows swell height, period and wind (offshore or onshore) every 3 hours for 5 days, and the tide chart has each day's high and low tides. Look for hours with offshore or calm wind, and remember that a long period (above 12 s) means waves with much more power.

Safety in the water

Rip currents are the main risk on the open beaches. Follow the flags and the lifeguards, do not surf alone in big conditions, and if a current pulls you out, paddle or swim parallel to the shore until you are out of it.
