Puerto Escondido beaches: which one to swim, surf or watch the sunset

Puerto Escondido is not one beach but a string of beaches and coves with very different characters: from powerful Zicatela, for surfers only, to sheltered coves that are great for swimming with kids. Here is how locals sort them: where they are, what the waves and safety are like, and which one fits what you want to do.

The main beaches, north to south

The main ones are Bacocho, Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito (and its neighbor Manzanillo), Playa Principal and Marinero in the town center, and the long Zicatela beach that ends at La Punta in the south. Each has its own access, waves and services; they are not all good for the same thing.

Waves and safety decide everything

The first thing to know is that waves change a lot from beach to beach. Zicatela is one of the most powerful beach breaks in the world (the Mexican Pipeline) and has rip currents: it is not for swimming. The sheltered coves such as Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito and Manzanillo are much calmer and safer. Always check the day's surf report, and follow the flags and the lifeguards before going in.

Which beach for what

For a quick decision:

  • Swimming / families: the sheltered coves (Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito, Manzanillo).
  • Surfing: Zicatela for experts; La Punta for learning.
  • Sunset and atmosphere: La Punta and the Zicatela strip.
  • Turtle releases and open space: Bacocho.
